The company: leadership and structure

Top One Trader is a proprietary trading firm established in 2023, headquartered in Sheridan, Wyoming, United States. Under the leadership of CEO Matt Morris, the firm has positioned itself within the forex and CFD prop trading space by offering a diverse range of funding models.

The firm operates with a high level of community engagement, evidenced by over 2,800 reviews on Trustpilot. Unlike many firms that operate through offshore entities, Top One Trader maintains its business registration within the U.S. jurisdiction, which implies compliance with specific corporate standards. The company utilizes Purple Trading as its primary broker partner, providing a bridge to institutional-grade liquidity for its simulated trading environments.

Evaluation models: diverse paths to funding

Top One Trader offers four primary funding paths, each designed to cater to different risk tolerances and trading styles. These models range from traditional multi-step evaluations to immediate capital access.

1-Step FLASH and 1-Step NOVA

The one-step models are designed for traders seeking a faster route to a funded account. The FLASH model requires a 10% profit target but imposes a daily drawdown limit. In contrast, the NOVA model is unique in its lack of a daily drawdown requirement, focusing instead on a 5% profit target and a trailing maximum drawdown. A notable feature of the NOVA plan is the provision of unlimited free resets during the evaluation phase, though it requires an activation fee once the target is met.

2-Step PRO v2

The PRO v2 model follows the industry-standard two-phase evaluation. Traders must hit an 8% target in Phase 1 and 5% in Phase 2. This model is the only one featuring a static drawdown, which provides more breathing room as the drawdown limit does not move upward with the account balance. It is also the only model that offers a refund of the evaluation fee, which is processed with the fourth payout.

Instant Funding and Instant Prime

For traders who prefer to skip the evaluation phase entirely, the Instant models provide immediate access to a funded account.

  • Instant Funding: Features a starting profit split of 60%, which scales by 10% per payout up to 90%.
  • Instant Prime: Offers a more aggressive profit split, starting at 80% and reaching 100% by the third payout. Both models are governed by trailing drawdown rules and generally prohibit the use of Expert Advisors (EAs) and news trading unless specific add-ons are purchased.

Drawdown and risk management: mechanisms and buffers

The firm employs distinct drawdown calculations that vary significantly between its programs. Understanding these differences is crucial for long-term account survival.

Trailing vs. Static Drawdown

Most programs (FLASH, NOVA, Instant) utilize a trailing maximum drawdown. This means the loss limit follows the highest recorded balance or equity. However, Top One Trader includes a "lock" mechanism: once a trader reaches a specific profit milestone (such as a 7% gain in FLASH) or receives a payout, the drawdown locks at the initial starting balance. This effectively converts a trailing drawdown into a static one once the trader has proven consistency. The PRO v2 is the exception, offering a 9% static drawdown from the outset, measured against the initial balance.

EquityShield and Max Open Risk

A specialized feature across all accounts is the EquityShield. This system acts as an automated safety net to prevent hard breaches of the daily or total loss limits.

  • Per Trade Limit: The system automatically closes all positions on a single symbol if the floating loss reaches 2% of the starting balance.
  • Combined Limit: All open positions across all symbols are closed if the total floating drawdown reaches 2.5% of the starting balance. Because these are triggered by floating equity, they are classified as soft breaches. This means the trades are closed to protect the account, but the account itself is not terminated.

Trading rules and restrictions: operational boundaries

Top One Trader enforces a set of technical rules that demand disciplined execution. These rules are categorized into "Hard Breaches" (which result in account loss) and "Soft Breaches" (which result in trade closure or warnings).

Mandatory Stop Loss and Holding Times

A mandatory Stop Loss (SL) must be active for every trade at the moment of execution. Failing to set an SL results in the system automatically closing the trade. While this is a soft breach, repeated violations can lead to account review depending on the program. Additionally, the firm enforces a 5-minute minimum holding time for any trade closed in profit. If a trader closes a profitable position in less than five minutes, the profit may be voided, as this is intended to prevent high-frequency "tick scalping" strategies.

News Trading and Consistency (ESS)

News trading is generally permitted during evaluation phases but restricted on funded accounts across most models. Traders are prohibited from opening or closing trades within a 10-minute window (5 minutes before and after) high-impact news events.

The firm also utilizes an Equity Stability Score (ESS) or consistency rule for NOVA, Instant Funding, and Instant Prime accounts. The formula [Largest Winning Day + |Largest Losing Day|] / Total Profit must remain within specific thresholds (usually 15% to 20%) to qualify for a payout. This ensures that the profit was generated through a consistent strategy rather than a single "lucky" trade or excessive gambling.

Prohibited Strategies

The firm strictly prohibits several strategies, including:

  • High-Frequency Trading (HFT) and Latency Arbitrage.
  • Grid trading and Martingale management.
  • Cross-account hedging (hedging between two different accounts to guarantee a win on one).
  • Account management by third parties ("Pass Your Challenge" services).

Payouts: frequency, methods, and limitations

The payout structure is designed to reward longevity, with several layers of conditions regarding timing and amounts.

Payment Schedule and Methods

The standard payout frequency is every 14 days. However, the firm offers "Add-ons" at the time of purchase that can reduce this to a weekly or even "on-demand" schedule for certain account types. Payouts are primarily processed through Rise, and the firm charges a 2% payout fee.

Withdrawal Caps and Profit Splits

There is a global maximum withdrawal limit of $25,000 per rolling 30-day period, combined across all of a trader's funded accounts. The PRO v2 model has additional restrictions, capping payouts at 6% of the initial balance or $15,000 per cycle, whichever is lower.

Profit splits are competitive, ranging from 80% on FLASH to potential 100% splits on NOVA and Instant Prime through the use of add-ons or reaching specific levels in the loyalty program.

Platforms, assets, and technical limitations

Top One Trader provides a broad selection of technical tools and tradable instruments, though geographic restrictions apply.

Available Technology

Traders can choose from several platforms, including MetaTrader 5, cTrader, DXTrade, MatchTrader, and TradingView. This variety allows traders to select an interface that matches their technical requirements, such as advanced charting or specialized execution tools. The available assets include:

  • Forex: Major and minor pairs.
  • Indices and Commodities: Global indices and metals/energies.
  • Crypto: Available for weekend trading, provided positions are opened after 8 PM EST on Friday.

Geographic Restrictions

The firm does not accept traders from several countries due to regulatory or high-risk designations. Prohibited jurisdictions include, but are not limited to, Afghanistan, Cuba, Iran, Iraq, North Korea, Pakistan, the Russian Federation, Syria, Ukraine, and Vietnam.

Specialized features: Payday accounts and Loyalty Program

Beyond standard funding, Top One Trader offers unique features that differentiate it from competitors.

The Payday Account

The Payday Account is a high-speed, short-term model. It is not a standard evaluation; instead, it is an 8-hour window where the trader selects a "stake" (from $25 to $500) and a multiplier (2x, 5x, or 10x). The objective is to complete a specific number of profitable trades (each gaining at least 1%) within the 8-hour timeframe. If successful, the trader keeps the full amount. This model uses a $100,000 simulated balance but features a very tight 1.5% trailing loss limit.

Top One Loyalty Program

The firm utilizes an XP-based loyalty system. Traders earn experience points through purchases, passing challenges, and receiving payouts. There are five levels:

  • Level 1 (Beginner) to Level 5 (Master): Advancing through levels unlocks benefits such as free Instant accounts, higher profit splits (up to an additional 7%), increased scaling boosts, and higher monthly payout caps. Higher levels also benefit from lower profit targets and larger loss buffers.

Summary: who this firm suits

Top One Trader offers a highly modular experience where the base rules can be significantly altered through "Add-ons" and loyalty rewards.

Key Considerations

  • Flexibility: The variety of platforms (MT5, cTrader, TradingView) is a significant advantage for technical traders.
  • Risk Protection: The EquityShield is a beneficial tool for preventing accidental account loss due to volatility.
  • Strict Discipline: The mandatory Stop Loss and 5-minute holding rule require a structured approach; traders who prefer "scalping" or "news gambling" will find the environment restrictive.
  • Capital Limits: The $25,000 monthly withdrawal cap across all accounts may be a bottleneck for high-volume, high-profit traders.

Trader Profile

This firm is best suited for disciplined intraday or swing traders who value platform choice and are comfortable with trailing drawdowns that eventually lock. The NOVA account is particularly attractive for those who struggle with daily drawdown limits, while the Payday account offers a unique outlet for traders looking for short-term, high-intensity objectives without the commitment of a long-term evaluation.
