How you lose the account
Losing an account in these firms is the primary risk for a trader. In both, the violation of risk limits (drawdown) usually results in immediate termination (hard breach), although some plans offer "soft closures" (temporary pauses).
At IQ Capital Futures, you lose the account if:
- You hit the trailing drawdown limit.
- You exceed the Daily Loss limit (on the second breach for Core DLL/Rapid plans; on the third for Position Loss plans).
- You trade for 8 calendar days without activity.
- You use prohibited strategies like HFT, latency arbitrage, or black-box bots.
At Top One Futures, you lose the account if:
- You hit the Maximum Drawdown (trailing or fixed depending on the plan).
- You hit the Daily Drawdown (hard breach in X-ULTRA; soft breach in Elite Challenge or X-Daily Spark).
- You remain inactive for 14 calendar days.
- You use EAs or bots (strictly manual trading only).
- You hold positions past 4:10 PM EST.
Maximum drawdown
Both firms primarily use End-of-Day (EOD) trailing drawdowns, which means the risk threshold only moves up based on your highest closed balance at the end of the day.
IQ Capital Futures uses EOD trailing for all plans. Once the threshold reaches the initial balance or after the first payout, it locks there.
- Example: In a $100,000 Core account with a $6,000 drawdown, your "failure point" starts at $94,000. If you end Day 1 at $102,000, your new failure point becomes $96,000. If you then request a payout, the threshold locks at $100,000 and never moves down, even if your balance drops.
Top One Futures also uses EOD trailing for most products (Elite, Instant, Ignite), but adds Intraday Trailing for S2F Sim Pro and Elite ACCESS Intraday, which tracks peak unrealized profit in real-time—a much higher risk.
- Example: In a $100,000 X-ULTRA account, the drawdown is $8,000. The threshold follows the highest closing balance and locks at $100,100. If you reach $108,000 at the end of a day, your floor is $100,100. Falling to $100,099 fails the account.
Daily drawdown
The daily limit is a "safety net" that, if poorly calibrated, becomes a trap.
IQ Capital Futures implements this via two methods:
- Core DLL and Rapid Daily: A Daily Loss limit is specified. The first breach is a soft closure; the second is a hard breach.
- Position Loss: It aggregates all trades in a market. The limit is 1% in evaluation and 0.5% in funded stages. You are allowed two soft closures; the third ends the account.
Top One Futures varies the daily limit by plan:
- Elite Challenge: 2.5% (soft breach).
- X-ULTRA: Hard breach calculated from the starting balance of the day, including floating losses.
- X-Daily Spark: No limit in evaluation; $1,000 soft breach when funded.
Rules beyond drawdown
Beyond the balance, time and consistency rules are the silent account killers.
- Minimum Trade Duration: IQ Capital requires at least 50% of trades and profits to come from positions lasting over 15 seconds. Top One has a 10-second rule; if more than 50% of trades are shorter, profits are removed.
- Inactivity: IQ is much stricter with an 8-day limit compared to Top One's 14-day limit.
- Consistency Rule: IQ applies a 30% rule for Core funded accounts. Top One has a wide range: 15% for Ignite, 20% for Instant, and up to 50% for X-ULTRA evaluation.
- Position Loss (IQ Only): A unique rule where risking more than 0.5% of the account on a single market's aggregate positions (including fees) can trigger a breach.
Risk that comes from the setup
The technical environment dictates execution risk. Slippage and platform stability can cause "accidental" drawdown breaches.
IQ Capital Futures uses dxFeed as a data provider and supports professional platforms like NinjaTrader and Quantower. It allows "self-developed" EAs where the trader has full logic control, which reduces the risk for algorithmic traders. However, Tradovate accounts are limited to DLL and cannot migrate from evaluations.
Top One Futures uses "Project X" and does not allow EAs or bots under any circumstances. This forces manual execution, increasing the risk of human error during high volatility. They allow news trading on most plans, but specifically restrict it (2 minutes before/after) on Elite Daily and Elite ACCESS funded accounts, creating a "trap" for traders who forget the calendar.
What is at stake and what you recover
The price of the challenge is the capital you risk losing immediately.
IQ Capital Futures offers a low-entry "Welcome" account for $9, but its standard 100K Core evaluation costs $475. Payouts are processed within 48 hours, or the firm grants a 100% split as a penalty. They allow withdrawing up to 50% of profits per request, which means you cannot "drain" the account instantly.
Top One Futures has a more aggressive pricing structure. An Elite ACCESS 100K starts at just $39 (entry fee) but requires a $259 activation fee later. They boast a very fast payout average (under 12 hours) and have minimum withdrawal amounts ranging from $50 (X-ULTRA) to $500 (Elite). Note that Top One has caps on payouts (e.g., $3,000 for a 100K Elite account) until the trader is moved to a "Live" environment.
Frequently asked questions
Which firm has a stricter inactivity rule, IQ Capital Futures or Top One Futures?
IQ Capital Futures is significantly stricter, as it closes the account after only 8 calendar days without trading activity. In contrast, Top One Futures allows up to 14 calendar days of inactivity before a hard breach occurs. In both cases, the count includes weekends and holidays.
Between IQ Capital Futures and Top One Futures, which allows the use of Trading Robots?
IQ Capital Futures allows the use of EAs, provided they are self-developed or transparent systems where the trader has full access to the source code and logic. Top One Futures strictly prohibits the use of any EAs, bots, or automated systems on all account types, allowing manual trading only.
Which firm is riskier for news traders, IQ Capital Futures or Top One Futures?
Top One Futures carries more risk for news traders because, although it is allowed on some plans, it is strictly prohibited in the funded phases of Elite Daily and Elite ACCESS (2 minutes before and after high-impact events). IQ Capital Futures allows news trading across its plans without those specific time-window restrictions.
Who offers a cheaper entry point for a 50K account, IQ Capital Futures or Top One Futures?
IQ Capital Futures offers the cheapest entry point with its "Welcome Offer" at $9, although it requires a $129 activation fee if passed. Top One Futures' cheapest entry is the Elite ACCESS at $39, which requires a $189 activation fee. Therefore, IQ Capital is the cheaper option for the initial purchase.
