Wirex review

Researched and written by TheGodFunded5 min read

Wirex is an app with an account and card that mixes regular money and crypto. You can hold euros, pounds or dollars alongside stablecoins and other cryptocurrencies, and spend any of them with the card. It has been around for many years, claims 7 million users and pays cashback in its own token, WXT.

We read its entire help center (121 articles), its terms, 834 of its 17,659 Trustpilot reviews and what is said about it on Reddit.

A warning first

Wirex is moving to a new app in 2026, Wirex One. Its help center still describes the old app, so some fees, limits or features may change. And almost every 2026 complaint comes from that move. More on that below.

Who is behind it

It is one of the most regulated providers on this list:

  • Wirex Limited, a UK company authorised by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) as an electronic money institution.
  • Crossmint Europe, S.L., a Spanish company providing the crypto services, authorised by the CNMV as a crypto-asset service provider and by the Bank of Spain as a payment institution.
  • Wirex Pte Ltd, in Singapore, which issues the card in Australia.

What to know from its terms:

  • Euro or pound balances are held in segregated accounts, so Wirex's creditors cannot claim them if it goes bust.
  • But they are not covered by any deposit guarantee scheme. It is not a bank.
  • If your account is closed for breaching its terms, there is a £30 processing fee.
  • Between 2020 and 2021 it charged a fee on inactive accounts, which it is now refunding.

How it works

  • Mandatory identity verification, with a liveness check.
  • Virtual card instantly, free. Physical card free but you pay shipping. You can only hold one physical card at a time.
  • Visa or Mastercard, depending on your region. There is also a metal Visa Signature card with higher limits and travel perks.
  • You choose which account pays. The card charges the linked account; if you pay in another currency, it converts it.
  • Apple Pay and Google Pay: in 2024 its support said on Reddit that the card could not be added directly and recommended doing it through another card, Curve. Its help center does not say whether that has changed.
  • More services: interest-bearing stablecoin accounts, crypto-backed loans and investment products, with their own risk.

Where you can get the card

The account is available in over 130 countries, but the card only in 35: most of the European Union (Spain included), the UK, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Argentina and Brazil. There is no card in the United States, Mexico, Colombia, Chile or Peru, although you can open an account.

Standard card limits: €30,000 a month in purchases, €500 a day and €5,000 a month at ATMs.

Cashback in its own token

Wirex pays cashback in WXT, its token. It is not money: its value goes up and down, and if you want it in euros you have to exchange it.

Plan Fee Cashback
Standard Free 0.5%; 1% if you lock 150,000 WXT for 180 days
Premium €9.99 a month or €102 a year 1%; up to 3% by locking WXT
Elite €29.99 a month or €306 a year 4%; up to 8% by locking 7.5 million WXT

The famous 8% requires the most expensive plan plus locking millions of tokens. And there are caps per purchase and per month, also in WXT. ATM withdrawals and transfers do not earn cashback.

For receiving your payouts

If your firm pays by euro bank transfer, you can give it your Wirex account to receive by SEPA, with no fee. If it pays in crypto, you can receive it at your Wirex address, on a network Wirex supports: one user says they sent USDT when only USDC was supported and had to ask for help. Bear in mind that in 2026 there are many complaints about stablecoin funds held for weeks by verifications.

What users say

It scores 2.3 out of 5 on Trustpilot, from 17,659 reviews, and Trustpilot shows a high-risk investment notice. Our review analysis above breaks it down.

What comes up most:

  • In 2026, three in four reviews are 1 star. Mostly because of the move to Wirex One: balances that do not show, crypto that cannot be transferred and an app that feels half-finished.
  • Funds held. Cases of $1,295, $2,094 and $7,402 in stablecoins blocked for weeks by verifications; one was returned after 45 days.
  • Automated support. Template replies and tickets passed between departments.
  • Those without problems describe a card that works while travelling, reasonable fees and good stablecoin interest. Some have been customers for seven years.

How to use it well

  1. Check the card is available in your country, not just the account.
  2. If you are already a customer, migrate to Wirex One calmly and with little balance inside.
  3. Do not treat cashback as money: exchange it to euros if you want to keep it.
  4. Do not pay for a paid plan just for the cashback. Do the maths with your monthly spending.
  5. Check the network and coin before sending crypto.
  6. Do not keep more than you plan to spend.

Alternatives

  • KAST: 1.5% cashback in dollars with no fee, but the company is in the Comoros.
  • RedotPay: $10 virtual card and widely used outside Europe.
  • Revolut or Wise: if what you want is a reliable euro account to receive your payouts.

Verdict

On paper, Wirex is one of the most solid crypto cards: regulated in the UK and Spain, a free card, no exchange fee and a euro account. For years it has worked for many people.

But 2026 is going badly: the switch to Wirex One has filled its reviews with missing balances and money held for weeks, and its 8% cashback is nearly out of reach. If you use it, use it for spending, with a small balance and no rush to migrate.

Who it is for: residents of Europe, the UK, Australia, Argentina or Brazil who want a free card to spend crypto and euros, with a regulated company behind it.

Who it is not for: residents of the United States or most of Latin America, anyone after cashback in real money, and anyone who needs their money available at all times.

What people say about Wirex on Trustpilot

We read 834 of its 17659 reviews (the 200 most recent of each 1 to 4 star rating and the 5 star ones among the 200 most recent. the analysis focuses on the 230 from 2026), on 8 October 2026.

Features 3.6

Users like interest-bearing stablecoin accounts, the card with no exchange fee and the cashback. But cashback is paid in WXT, its own token, and going above 0.5% requires a fee or locking tokens.

Reliability 2.0

In 2026, three in four reviews are 1 star. Most come from the move to the new app, Wirex One: balances that do not show, crypto that cannot be transferred and funds held for weeks by verifications. There are cases of $1,295, $2,094 and $7,402 in stablecoins held; one was returned after 45 days.

★★★★★“Wirex has been holding 7,402.05 USDC of mine since 20 July 2026.”
★★★★★“I migrated my account from Wirex to Wirex One, but I can't see my balance”
Value for money 3.4

Few complain about fees: the card is free, there is no currency exchange fee and satisfied users mention reasonable fees. Complaints are about the real value of cashback in WXT and the paid plans.

See review
★★★★★“Conversion fees are very reasonable and deposit times are also fast.”
Ease of use 3.0

The old app was described as easy. The new one, according to several users, launched too early: features that existed before are missing, migration fails and passkeys cause problems.

See review
★★★★★“I get the impression that the transition was rushed, because the new app still has quite a few limitations and feels incomplete.”
Support 1.8

Six in ten negative reviews from 2026 mention support: automated replies, tickets passed between departments and weeks without a fix while money is held.

See review
★★★★★“I asked several times to check the situation and complete the migration to Wirex One app, but I received only bot answers.”
Transparency 2.6

It is a regulated UK company and replies to almost every review, but with templates asking for details or citing compliance without explaining the case. In 2020 and 2021 it charged an inactivity fee that it is now refunding.

Few in 2026, and half from accounts with one or two reviews. Long-time users stand out, using it to spend while travelling and to earn interest on stablecoins.

Those from earlier years describe a card that works with the odd hiccup; in 2026 there are almost none.

They dominate 2026. Failed migration to Wirex One, funds held for weeks, accounts restricted or closed for compliance and support that gives no answers. Several cite amounts in the thousands of dollars.
